Portfolio: Heather Hawaii

Hi guys!  Since I have been stuck inside due to piles of snow and unable to really get out to take pretty outfit photos, I thought I would share some photos I took in Hawaii of my brother's beautiful girlfriend heather!  It was such a treat to get to be creative on the other end of the camera for once and we had so much shooting these at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel on the big island.  Which is your favorite?

I would love to start building a little photography portfolio with more shoots like this, so if you are located in Colorado and ever want to shoot, don't hesitate to send me an email! Heather would like to break into the modeling industry and is located in the NY/NJ area, so if you have any connections you would be willing to share, please pass them along!  I definitely think she has what it takes! Thanks Heather for such a fun day!

Maroon & Gold

Hi guys! Here I am dressed like I am going to cheer for team Gryffindor from the bleachers at Hogwarts.  But nope, just a casual work day outfit for me!  Actually, if I manage actual jeans instead of yoga leggings during the winter working from home, its considered "dressed up".  So here I am dressed up. ;)
Outfit Details:
Sweatshirt- Ross
Bouse- c/o August Wrinkle
Pants - Rue21
Sneakers - New Balance 420s
Beanie - Forever 21

R recently got a new job and is now working remotely (from home) too, so we took these on a warm day a few weeks back when we took a little picnic bike ride over lunch.  Now he is in San Francisco, where his company is based, for training while I'm snowed in here that lucky dog.  That's okay though because I don't think I have been alone in our house for an extended period of time since we moved in together last June, so while I miss him, its kind of exciting to have the run of the place for the week!  I have already stolen his favorite mug, dyed my hair pink, and made a huge pillow nest around me while I slept, and he only left yesterday!
Hope you guys are having a good start to your week!

Banana Mac Nut Pancakes with Lilikoi Butter

Last weekend for Valentines day, R and I had agreed to not do gifts and fancy restaurants but just have a low key day in.  I am still a firm believer though that on Valentines day or any other morning, it is still fun to do something nice for someone, so I woke up and got to making some yummy pancakes inspired by a favorite Hawaiian treat.  Cooking is such an awesome way to do something nice because, let's be honest, YOU get to enjoy the finished product as well! The recipe I used was from Food.com, changing a few things slightly to use what I had on hand.

Ingredients: (2 servings)

  • 3/4 cups all-purpose flower
  • 1 1/2  tbs sugar
  • 3/4 tbs baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cups well-shaken cream (original calls for buttermilk, but cream worked fine).
  • 1 1/2 tbs unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 large ripe banana
  • 1/4 cup chopped macadamia nuts
Toppings

Directions:
1. Whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a bowl.
2. Whisk together buttermilk, 2 tablespoons melted butter, eggs, and vanilla in a large bowl until smooth. Add flour mixture and whisk until just combined.
3. Cut banana into bits and fold into batter along with nuts. (Batter will be very thick.).
4. Brush a 12-inch nonstick skillet with some of remaining tablespoon melted butter and heat over moderate heat until hot but not smoking.
5. Working in batches of 2 or 3, pour 1/4 cup batter per pancake into hot skillet and cook until bubbles appear on surface and undersides are golden brown, 1 to 2 minutes.
6. Flip pancakes with a spatula and cook until golden brown and cooked through, 1 to 2 minutes more.
7. Transfer to a large plate and loosely cover with foil to keep warm, then make more pancakes, brushing skillet with butter for each batch.
8. Stack on plates, add toppings as desired, and enjoy!

While these do take a little bit of time to mix up, they are super simple and delicious!  The recipe I used above is halved from the original recipe that was for four people, and it was the perfect amount for R and I. And even if you don't feel like baking, I strongly suggest you pick up a jar of Lilikoi (passionfruit) butter!  Have you ever tried it? Its sweet but tangy and can be used in the place of a butter or syrup on tons of awesome things!  Warm on vanilla ice cream, fruit, toast... yum!  If you decide to whip these up this weekend, please let me know what you think!

A Tale of Two Dresses

Sometimes having a vintage shop is hard, because sometimes you have to put things that you want for yourself into the shop and sell it. And by sometimes, I mean all the time.  But there are definitely pieces that pull my heartstrings when they sell more than others!  So, back in 2012 I found the perfect red and green plaid dress and hemmed it into a babydoll.  I put it in the shop and it sold immediately, and I remember for a long time wishing I had kept it.  A few weeks ago, I stumbled upon the same dress in the thrift store, hemmed this one into a babydoll too, and ITS MINE!  Now me and a sweet customer in Hong Kong are dress twins.

Outfit Details
Dress - Vintage/ altered
Hat - Forever21
Boots- thrifted
Bow - sash from a dress

Sorry, maybe that wasn't a very good story, but you have to love some good thrifting karma!  I also took a tip from Tonya and "put a bow on it".  And while lately I have been leaning more towards more casual pants looks, I have to admit it was fun to throw a vintage dress and boots on again.  And speaking of vintage, if you have had an eye on anything in the shop, you should definitely head over and check it out again because I lowered the price on almost everything, and also added a ton of stuff to the $10 sale section!  Hope you all had a great weekend, and hopefully if you're in the US you even have the day off today as well!

Guava Papaya

What I would give to still be here as we speak, sipping on a mai tai before we heading out to dinner!  Coming back from Hawaii, no matter how long or short the visit, always leaves me with an unsettled yearning, or the post-vacation blues!

Outfit Details
Romper & Necklace- The Root (Kauai)
Crystal Necklace - Vintage
Purse - Vintage
Sandals - gift
Hat - Eddie Bauer

I felt completely in my element in this bright outfit. I picked up this cute romper and fringe necklace at a local boutique in Hanalei called The Root.  It's super comfy and now I wish summer would hurry up and get here in Colorado so I can wear it again.  R and I actually rented kayaks from the place I am standing in front of earlier that morning and spent a few hours paddling down the river through trees and jungle.  I may or may not have been able to lift my arms for the rest of the day afterwards.
This is the end of the outfit photos from my trip, so it will be back to wintry Colorado posts after this (though I can't complain, the weather here has been unseasonably warm lately too!)  Hope you guys are having a good week!

Island Americana

I was going to title this post "Island Patriot", but I didn't want anyone to get the false impression that I watched the Superbowl yesterday...
Outfit Details
Shirt - Swell (Mens section/ altered)
Shorts - Vintage
Hat - Eddie Bauer

These snaps were taken outside of the little cottage we rented in Hanalei.  The top was from the men's section of Swell, and I brought up the length and the sleeves to make it into a crop top right before we left.  The shorts also used to be a really awkward almost-knee length.  It's amazing what some tiny/ easy alterations can do!  Hope you guys had a wonderful weekend!
