Kitty Chronicles: Hammy

As promised, here are a few pictures I snapped of my foster kitty Hamilton! Isn't he handsome?!  Hamilton (or Hammy, as I tend to call him), was hit by a car a few weeks ago and was brought into my local humane society. I had just signed up to become a foster parent for kitties and was so excited when I got the email about Hammy.  Sadly, he had to get one of his back legs amputated, so they needed someone to take him for a few weeks to give him all of his medicine and give him some love and attention while he healed- and that's where I come in!

When I first got Hammy two weeks ago, you could tell he was very frightened and in a lot of pain so he would often hiss and bite if I tried to get close.  Only two weeks later, he is a little snuggler and will come sit on my lap as soon as I sit down on the floor.  He loves being picked up and put on my bed to hang out up there with me and I am so happy he has become such a sweetheart in such a short period of time!
Hamilton goes back to the shelter today to get his stitches out and go into the adoption room to hopefully get adopted as soon as possible! Everyone always asks "how can you give them up at the end?!" I grew up doing foster care for cats with my mom, and though it is always hard, you know that you helped the kitties in some way and that you wouldn't be able to take in future foster kitties if you kept them all! Anyway, just wanted to show everyone how adorable Mister Hammy is and I am going to be asked to be notified when he find his forever home (and visit him in the meantime)! So send some luck and love in his direction!
Have any of you ever volunteered at an animal shelter or adopted a pet from one?

  3. Aww Hanny & Hammy : ) How wonderful of you to foster and nurse him to recovery Hannah! I don't know if I ever wrote about it, but Mango was in foster care for a upper respiratory infection before we adopted him, so I'm esp grateful to wonderful people like you! Hammy really is a beauty and I hope he finds a home soon. One of my childhood friends had a 3 legged kitty and I always loved how it hopped around like a bunny. I have always wondered this about fostering too, if he doesn't find a home, would you be notified to foster him longer or adopt? I've been following this friends of the county facebook group of animals on the e-list and it makes me so sad i want to adopt them all.

  4. Aw, what a beautiful cat! Look at his blue eyes! I'm glad that he warmed up to you and became a bit calmer once he knew he was safe. We're going to go to our animal shelter when summer is over and get a cat now that we have a home for one. I am so absolutely excited and cannot wait! I've never heard of cat foster programs though, how wonderful that you can help in that way!

  9. Ahh. I'm fostering a dog this week too and I've already gotten attached to him. I'm going to be very sad when he goes back next week, but I'm happy I was able to take care of him for the short time I've had him. You're doing a really good thing.
