Black is the new black.

Hi friends! Finally Friday and finally a blog post! You'll probably notice things looking a bit different around here, can I get another "finally"!?  I have a fresh new blog layout thanks to Suzana at This Girl Designs.  I have been looking for weeks for a pre made template that I like, something new with lots of white and clean lines.  I decided on this one, which Suzana installed for me free of charge within 24 hours of my purchase which was awesome.  I then tweaked a few things to make it a bit more personalized to my style, and voila, here it is!

On to the outfit! This is the second way I am styling this adorable peter pan collar dress from Erica of Sweets and Hearts, this time wearing it as a blouse.  This quilted skirt is going to definitely be a fall and winter staple for me.  And my pink hair is almost completely faded! I am trying to resist the urge to re-do it because I am heading to Italy at the end of the month and want just my natural hair for the trip.  R and I are trying to learn some key Italian phrases!  So far the most important thing I have discovered in my language lessons is that "latte" just means milk, not a type of coffee drink!

If any of you have been to Italy I would love to hear some suggestions!  We are going to be on the Amalfi coast for most of the time (Positano, Sorrento, and Capri) and then back up to Rome, Florence, and Venice!  I am SO excited!

These purple thistle flowers that grow all over around here are so beautiful! That and the wild sunflowers that run rampant on the roadsides this time of year.  Summer please don't leave!

Orange is the New Black

A few years ago I started this blog as a networking and promotional tool for the vintage shop I was opening.  Last night while R and I were working on some rebranding materials, he asked me what my blog is for now.  While I still think it is important networking and promotional tool, this blog has also really become a favorite creative outlet of mine.  Since our recent move to a new town, I have actually liked going out to explore new photo locations and my tripod has again become more of a buddy and less of a dreaded necessity.  All that to say... I know these photos are strange, but sometimes I really like to not only use this blog to show "what I'm wearing", but also get to express a bit of creativity through it!

Down the road from our new place is this giant abandoned sugar mill.  Even closer are these open fields with strange abandoned concrete patches and sand piles.  Most people think the mill is an eye sore, but I actually find places that these "leftover" places beautiful.   I thought it would be a fun contrast to shoot a colorful feminine outfit in this strange mix of industrial and wild. The effects are pretty but definitely eery.

On a more sartorial note, orange is definitely not one of my usual favorite colors, but when Taylor offered up this pretty textured dress for swap, I couldn't pass it up!  I paired it with a beautiful hand beaded necklace from Dus's fair trade shop Mitla Moda, along with my favorite meowmaid pin and a flower crown I made.  Dus said this necklace reminded her of my pink wig, so I of course had to throw that on too to complete the crazy sorbet colored party!

The Novelty of Summer

Hi guys!  I decided to wake up and go on a bike ride exploring my new neighborhood this morning instead of writing a blog post.  Judging from my general improved mood today, I'd say this was a good decision!

I feel like a broken record whenever I talk about Sammi of The Soubrette Brunette on here, but she seriously is just the sweetest gal with a killer wardrobe!  I borrowed this novelty print dress with vintage cars and records on it, and used R's little Miata as the backdrop for these photos.

Anyway, my to-do list is a million miles long, I want to get so much done!  Hope you all have a beautiful weekend!

Lilikoi Dress

I have admired the label Dear Creatures from afar for quite some time, so you can imagine my delight when fellow Flock Together gal Amy offered this beautiful dress up for swap!  I got it in the mail last week and decided it would be perfect to wear for our casual brunch on Easter Sunday.  Plus, R said the print looked like the inside of a Lilikoi (or passionfruit), which somehow made me love it even more!

For brunch we ate cheesy scrambled eggs, salmon, chocolate fondue, and of course, a bloody mary!  We stopped on the way home to take these photos in front of a favorite barn of mine, which the weather thankfully held out for.  A kind samaritan even pulled over to ask us if we needed help, as he thought our car was broken down haha.

Mint + Lace

     We're half way there guys. I have been busy working extra hours this week so I can leave early on Friday and have already started to pack for a weekend in the mountains.  I was excited to see the forecast was in the mid 60s there which actually means I could wear long sleeves or a sweater!  This week I have also been getting back into running after work.  And by that I mean I ran Sunday and Monday and then decided to not run last night and eat a whole large frozen pizza instead.  Baby steps!

    I was actually reading an article on Refinery 29 last night about a "new" trend called the Healthie.  Basically, instead of the selfie photos on instagram, its taking it to a new level by posting dieting results and workout pictures, etc.  Basically the question behind the article was: is this trend just plain narcissistic or actually inspiring to both you and others?  Personally, I am pretty unfazed by the trend.  I feel like our generation is so used to (over)sharing, its really nothing new.  I have friends on facebook that post daily workout times and always am seeing before and after juice cleanse results on instagram. I think if you are feeling good about your progress and what your doing it is your right to share about it if you want, and if it bothers you seeing it or gets annoying, you should just scroll right on by the post.  Though I don't know if its something I personally would do and I do think there is a tasteful level to be maintained in the sharing department, I do enjoy reading exercise results and detox regimes once in a while on others' blogs!  Hearing about success stories, what works and what doesn't, and people being proud of their bodies doesn't have to make you feel bad about yours.  I usually try to approach it as "take it or leave it".  If you think its inspiring or helpful, take it.  If you think it is annoying (which I agree it totally can be), just scroll on by, skip the like, the heart, or the pin, and go on about your day.  Anyway, just my thoughts, I would love to know what you think!
     On the tangent of fitness and personal appearance, this bodysuit from Urbanog is pretty risque for me! I bought it on a one day flash sale for a really reduced price because I loved the print and thought it would be fun to try something new. R doesn't understand why its a bodysuit and not a swimsuit. I said its because of the material being not fast drying and lined as well, but hey if you want to wear your bodysuit swimming you go for it!  I paired it with this gorgeous lacy skirt I am borrowing from Jenna over at Smitten.  Since it has a comfortable high waisted fit, it was the perfect way to be just the right amount of covered up.  Jenna also just had her birthday yesterday and she has the CUTEST style, so you should definitely stop by her blog to say hello and wish her a happy belated birthday!

Hump-day Shlump-day

Sometimes I think Wednesdays are the most difficult days to write posts for.  I usually stare at my cursor blinking on the white screen and rack my tired, mid-week, brain for a small shred of inspiration to share with you all.  On Mondays, you can regal in fun weekend memories, and on Fridays you always have something to look forward to, even if that something is doing nothing.  I think Wednesdays are just for trying to keep your chin up and head above water.

    As I vowed a few weekend ago to start sharing some more of my casual outfits, I am trying to deliver on that promise, and I have to admit I am enjoying it more than I thought! I think I am trying to redefine what I view as a "blog-worthy" outfit.  I am slowly learning that it is not about how many accessories you are wearing, how trendy the dress is, or how craftily you are layering prints, but more about having  quality images and just being yourself.  R even said this outfit was one of his favorite outfits of mine, so bring on the ripped boyfriend jeans!

Feelin' Fancy Fine

This past weekend brought some Spring-like weather for us here in Colorado, so R and I decided to drive into the mountains a few miles to one of our favorite warm weather parks by a creek.  Our plan was to sit on the little picnic benches eating our packed sandwiches and soaking up some sunshine, but the wind had other plans and actually made it a bit more miserable and chilly than anticipated. I tried to choose a few pictures where my hair wasn't stuck to in my lipstick and my tent dress wasn't plastered to my thighs. So without further adieu, I present to you a cute yet highly impractical outfit for a windy mountain picnic!

     A bit more about what I am wearing.  I borrowed this wonderful dress from Elana of Room 334 and was so excited when she put it up for swapping in our Flock Together group!  Even more exciting is that this dress is the Modcloth namesake dress of Ashley from the blog Fancy Fine.  I absolutely love Ashley's quirky vintage style and her blog was one of the main one's that inspired me to start my own!  So, the t-strap sandals, rust colored tights, and floral tapestry bag are a little ode to Fancy Fine!
