Banana Mac Nut Pancakes with Lilikoi Butter

Last weekend for Valentines day, R and I had agreed to not do gifts and fancy restaurants but just have a low key day in.  I am still a firm believer though that on Valentines day or any other morning, it is still fun to do something nice for someone, so I woke up and got to making some yummy pancakes inspired by a favorite Hawaiian treat.  Cooking is such an awesome way to do something nice because, let's be honest, YOU get to enjoy the finished product as well! The recipe I used was from Food.com, changing a few things slightly to use what I had on hand.

Ingredients: (2 servings)

  • 3/4 cups all-purpose flower
  • 1 1/2  tbs sugar
  • 3/4 tbs baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cups well-shaken cream (original calls for buttermilk, but cream worked fine).
  • 1 1/2 tbs unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 large ripe banana
  • 1/4 cup chopped macadamia nuts
Toppings

Directions:
1. Whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a bowl.
2. Whisk together buttermilk, 2 tablespoons melted butter, eggs, and vanilla in a large bowl until smooth. Add flour mixture and whisk until just combined.
3. Cut banana into bits and fold into batter along with nuts. (Batter will be very thick.).
4. Brush a 12-inch nonstick skillet with some of remaining tablespoon melted butter and heat over moderate heat until hot but not smoking.
5. Working in batches of 2 or 3, pour 1/4 cup batter per pancake into hot skillet and cook until bubbles appear on surface and undersides are golden brown, 1 to 2 minutes.
6. Flip pancakes with a spatula and cook until golden brown and cooked through, 1 to 2 minutes more.
7. Transfer to a large plate and loosely cover with foil to keep warm, then make more pancakes, brushing skillet with butter for each batch.
8. Stack on plates, add toppings as desired, and enjoy!

While these do take a little bit of time to mix up, they are super simple and delicious!  The recipe I used above is halved from the original recipe that was for four people, and it was the perfect amount for R and I. And even if you don't feel like baking, I strongly suggest you pick up a jar of Lilikoi (passionfruit) butter!  Have you ever tried it? Its sweet but tangy and can be used in the place of a butter or syrup on tons of awesome things!  Warm on vanilla ice cream, fruit, toast... yum!  If you decide to whip these up this weekend, please let me know what you think!

Take It Easy

Hi guys,
I've got to keep this short but just wanted to stop in and say hello.  I am on a little mini vacation renting a cabin/ house up in the mountains with R's family right now and unfortunately just realized I forgot my computer charger.  The extra unfortunate part is that this Monday was supposed to be a big and exciting new business announcement for me, but I am pushing it back a week because my computer battery has only about thirty minutes left before it dies and I won't be able to get everything done in time!  Oh well, now I will just be "forced" to sit back and relax.  So on that note, here are a few snaps from a little hike we did in Breckenridge today!

(The gang minus R's mom!)

My apologies in advance for my upcoming unplanned absence!  I will still be posting on instagram if you'd like to follow along there.  I'm going to go try enjoy myself and not feel so panicky about not having my computer for the next four days!  I think a beer and a soak in the hot tub may help ;)
xoxo!

Nautical Mini Vases DIY

With moving to a new house last month, I definitely have had a case of the DIY/ decorating/ nesting bug so I'm going to start sharing a few projects and recipes on here!  With a yard full of fresh blooming flowers, I realized I had nothing to put them in.  Rob had brought home a case of cute little Sessions bottled beers, so I decided to clean & save a few of the empties to hold little fresh cut flowers.  I added the white nautical rope as to give them a more finished & summery vibe!

Project Cost:
About $2 for the rope, I already had all of the other materials.

Supplies needed:
Glue gun
Glue Sticks
Recycled bottles of your choice
Rope (from craft store)

Step 1. Put a dab of glue at the end of the rope and start rolling it into a tight circle.  Put dots of glue intermittently to hold it together while rolling.
Step 2. Once the rope circle is approximately the size of the bottom of the bottle, attach the circle to the bottom with glue.
Step 3.  Start wrapping the bottle with rope, making sure to intermittently put dots of glue every inch or so to hold it in place.
Step 4.  Cut off end at the height you would like, securing the frayed end in place with extra glue.
Note: I did half of my bottles wrapped to the base of the label, and for the other two I removed the label and wrapped the rope higher.  Whatever you think looks best!

And there you have it: cute little vases to put buds in!  These would look super cute on outdoor tables for a 4th of July BBQ.  Have you been doing any summery projects lately?  If you've posted a DIY, link to it and I would love to take a peak!

My Apartment & Studio Tour

Hello and welcome to my humble abode!  As promised, today I am finally sharing a tour of my little apartment and home office for my vintage shop!  Built in the early 1900s, my apartment is on the bottom level of an old Victorian house in the historic district of my town.  With age comes the charm that really made me fall in love with the place, but it also definitely brings a few quirks that I could live without (cough cough, I don't have a shower... only a bathtub)!  There is a bedroom, the main living room/ office area, and then a tiny kitchen and bathroom.  And even with all the odd quirks, I really couldn't have asked for a better place to be the first real place that was all my own!

What would you say is your "design aesthetic"?
I really love bright white spaces with pops of color.  For this apartment, I stuck with neutral whites and grey's and then brought in punches of citrusy- pastel colors throughout with flowers, plants, and artwork.

What is your favorite thing to do in your apartment?
Whew, that's a hard one! I really love mornings here, drinking coffee and reading my favorite blogs or editing photos.  That is definitely my most inspired time of day.  I really love having a super productive day working on the shop too, whether that be writing a bunch of new listings or shooting a lot of new products!  My favorite non work related guilty pleasure to do at home is to get takeout and eat it snuggled in bed watching a show on netflix!

Favorite Part of the Apartment:
My favorite part of my apartment definitely has to be the little breakfast nook table with stools.  Besides the dark hardwood floors and the arched doorways, it's what really made the apartment feel special!  When I first moved in, I did a DIY to make the hanging caged lantern lights using materials I bought off amazon, and later added the hanging plants and a beautiful "Stop and Smell the Roses" print R got me for my birthday this year.

Least favorite thing about the apartment:
The thing I really don't like about this apartment is the lack of natural light, which is probably evident in these dingily lit photos.  Though the windows are above ground level, there are not many, and there is also a hedge (for privacy) that blocks out a lot of the light.  Because my online shop depends heavily on well lit product photos, it makes the editing part of my job way harder!  I think this is what I am most excited about when R and I move this summer.  The new place definitely needs to have lots of bright natural light!

How do you balance work and personal space when it is just one small studio?
This is also a touch one, and I hope to have a bit more separation of space when I move this summer.  However, I have definitely found ways to make this work as both a home and an office/studio!  It really came down to creative organization for all of my vintage inventory.  I used to have multiple bulky rolling racks around the living room, but then purchased my huge ikea shelving unit which has been a life saver.  Now after an item is fully cleaned, altered, photographed, and listed, it gets folded and tucked away into a color-coordinated shelf until it is purchased by someone and shipped out.  The second most important thing for me is to always keep things really neat and clean.  In such a small space, everything needs to have a place, and its helpful to put everything away and clean up the days work before breaking for the night.

What does a typical shop day look like for you working from home?
It really depends on the day!  I try to do shop tasks in large chunks, focusing on one or two main things for the day instead of trying to dabble in a little bit of everything every day.  For example, one day may be solely focused on altering and fixing up a new batch of vintage with lots of sewing.  Another day may be for photographing items to go in the shop and then editing photos for Etsy listings.  Saturdays are almost always my buying days, as its when the thrift stores in my area usually have the best sales happening.  Whatever the focus of the day is,  it usually begins with a short trip to the gym or a home workout, followed by coffee and blogging or answering emails.  I then get into the main task of the day, and take a break for lunch or to walk to the post office to ship out orders.  Typically I make an easy home cooked meal and end the day relaxing either doing some sort of craft or watching a favorite show.  And my weekend are almost always spent at R's place!

Thanks so much for stopping by, I hope you enjoyed hearing a little bit more about my place and my day to day life! If you have any questions about where anything is from, just leave it in the comment section and I will get back to you!
